Teenage Hair Loss: Yes, it happens

Hair loss in teenage girls is more common than you think. Girls as young as 13 complain about losing hair and wondering what to do to prevent it. Of course, when it comes to teens, hair loss could be happening for many reasons. Actually, for girls, hair loss can come from poor diet, an ailment, chemical imbalance, and even, stress.

Chemical imbalance are often medicine related. Such as a new prescription pill that the body experience an adverse reaction. Some young women who just began taking birth control pills also experience temporary hairloss.

HairMax LaserComb - Is it the hair growth comb to many?

Much of the recent buzz around the fight against hair loss centers on the FDA approved laser hair treatment manufactured by Lexington, called the HairMax LaserComb. Many observers lauded the hand-held laser hair therapy as an advancement that benefits millions of men suffering from male pattern baldness. One proponent, Bill Blatter, president of the Hair Loss Control Clinic in Latham, New York, was quoted in the Times Union stating that "[t]he biggest problem in the hair-loss industry is credibility. Most people have been ripped off. Now, they know the laser works. It gives them a comfort zone that there is a product approved by the FDA."

Still, there were also skeptics of varying degrees who reasonably (some unreasonably) criticized the laser hair comb. Much of the skepticism seem to come from past experiences with products that claim to grow hair fast. Below are the articles I could find online that are critical of the latest scalp stimulator. I compiled what I can so that visitors of this site may receive a more complete picture of the laser comb review:

Adam Frucci and SCI FI Tech awarded HairMax LaserComb the top honor for Top 10 Wildest, Wackiest Gadgets from the Back of Magazines. Mr. Frucci went on to write, "I'm still beyond skeptical, but if you feel like using lasers to comb your hair and don't think $545 is too much to waste on such a questionable product, now you've got the FDA to blame in addition to yourself for your idiotic purchasing choices."

In an article for Earthtimes.org, Dr. Marc Avram was quoted, "It is a new therapy that is not a magical cure unfortunately, but for some patients, it will be helpful to help maintain or re-grow some hair.”

From KARE 11, a local TV station in Minnesota, their article indicated that "Experts say the device is not as effective as Rogaine or Propecia, the two medications approved to treat hair loss."

Steve Tiley of Edmontonsun.com released a very skeptical article. He wrote, "For real? A laser comb that grows hair? All these shampoos and natural remedies and scalp massagers have been proven bogus, but blasting your head with frickin' laser beams - if you'll pardon the way-obvious Dr. Evil reference - gets a pass?" He then went on to say that "all these pills and procedures and products seem like so much effort and expense to save something that, for a lot of us guys, is gonna disappear eventually no matter what we do."

In Wired Blog Network, their article's title speaks for their opinion, "The Lasercomb Restores Hair but Not Dignity", and refers to users of the LaserComb as "embarassed baldies."

FDA Approves Sale of Laser Comb For Hair Growth

Started using Minoxidil again

As I stated in my website, I stopped using minoxidil a few years ago after deciding to let my hair go and simply shave or wear my hair closely-cropped. Well, since I began experimenting with regrowth treatments, I'm encouraged by my results. So I decided to up my efforts one notch and use Hairobics with minoxidil. Gotta make sure to update my website indicating a change in my regiment.

Am I getting too greedy? Don't know. I just feel that I lost too much hair follicles that I'll never really get to the illusion of a full head of hair. My goal is to keep what I have, especially the still-unaffected areas, so that I have what's called a healthy reserve of donor area for a possible hair transplant. Not quite sold on getting a hair transplant, I just want the option.

By the way, I bought my 3 month supply of minoxidil from eBay for less than $25.00 USD, including shipping. That's a bargain compared to buying from a store.

Growing My Hair - 5 months later

Prior to re-starting treatment of my thinning hair in late Sept 2006, I had given up all forms of efforts to stop hair loss. In fact, I was buzz-cutting to minimize the prominent thinning spot on top of my head. Luckily, mainstream media is kinder to the shaved-look, nowadays, and many times, it's even fashionable. Thank you Michael Jordan! Thank you Vin Diesel! Thank you Jason Statham!

But why did I re-start my bout with MPB (male pattern baldness)? Simple, I didn't like it on me. I feel much better even if I had just a thin layer of hair on my head. I still get the buzz cut, but it will be 2, maybe 3, in clipper talks, instead of 1 or completely shaved. Lucky for me, I met Stephanie Suthers, owner/founder of Hairobics All Natural, who gave me some tips on how to use her line of products to grow my hair.

Roughly 4-5 months later, here are my results:

Conclusion to date -- Still balding, duh! BUT, I feel, and, from the pics, see some of my thinning hair thicken. I do not think that I regrew hair, nothing out there can really do that. But some of the folicles that were dying, have been nourished so that it began growing hair once more. In between the longer hair strands, I feel some fuzzy growth of hair that I hope will grow to be normal in a few months.

I also believe that my results are inline with the results from Dateline NBC video where the effects of 5 hair loss treatments -- Rogaine, Propecia, Viviscal, hair transplant, HairMax Laser Comb -- were studied over 1 year on 5 men.

From what I've seen, the 6-month mark for these guys were not all that great either. But over a year, the results were remarkable. I'm hoping for the same results one year later with Hairobics.

Yearning for What Was

Remember the US Festival back in the 80’s? What about heavy metal or, to many, the hair bands? Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt and others made it seem cool to be a rocker? And it was. The carefree lifestyle that we emulated or tried to. The creative, sometimes destructive, celebration of youth. And the girls, oh the girls.

What about computers without Windows? Typing commands after the c:\ prompt. Then inserting a floppy in the a:\ drive to save the work. Try using those nowadays.My point is simple — times changed, not necessarily for the best, but it moved and left us behind some pleasant, some painful memories of what was back then.

Times changed and, most likely, you did too. Or you’re changing right now. As I am. Specifically, if you’re like me, then you might actually have thinning hair. Maybe even balding.

But wait a minute! It is perfectly acceptable for a mature man (child of the 80’s twenty years later is mature) to lose hair. What’s the big deal. It’s all part of life — your born, you grow-up, you get married, you have kids, you lose hair, you die. Losing hair is part of the traditional life cycle, at least for over 40 million American men. So you’re not alone.

But nah! I’m not ready to buy into the traditional thinking just yet. And neither are you. After all, we are in the millenium. We can clone animals. We can fix our eyeballs to get 20/20 vision through laser. I’m sure that we can do something about thinning hair. And we have been.
